Homework
When your student arrives home, remember to check if they have any homework. Each teacher may assign homework so students can practice what they learned in school. Below are ways to help you and your student complete their homework.
Typical Time for Homework:
Grades 1-3: 10-30 minutes up to 4 days per week
Grades 4-5: 30-60 minutes up to 4 days per week
Parent Responsibilities:
- Set a daily homework routine.
- Provide a dedicated spot, without distractions, for your student to work.
- Ask the teacher if you need support getting basic materials, like glue, paper, and pencils.
- Check your student's homework to make sure it is completed.
Your Student Responsibilities:
- Ask the teacher for more directions before you leave the school.
- Ask to borrow materials from school.
- Complete all assignments and turn them in on time.
- Make up all missed classroom work.
Teacher Responsibilities:
- Communicate clear directions to students in order to accomplish the task.
- Collect and record homework on a daily/weekly basis.
- Communicate with parents when homework is not turned in.
The teachers in an AVID grade are provided AVID Elementary training and coaching from AVID enabling them to design grade level specific lessons.
AVID Elementary
As a foundational component of the AVID College Readiness System, AVID Elementary focuses on specific AVID Essentials to ensure quality and consistency as a transformational system. Our AVID program provides students with academic support in writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading. The teachers in an AVID grade are provided AVID Elementary training and coaching in the program, allowing them to design grade-level specific lessons.
- Instruction - Provides the framework for AVID instruction, with L-WICOR, laying the foundation of instruction in AVID Elementary classrooms.
- Culture - Incorporate a culture of rigorous, relevant, differentiated opportunities for all students in an environment that promotes college readiness.
- Leadership - Provides leadership supports, guides, and facilitates implementation for all students.
- Systems - Aligns systems through the use of the four pillars of excellence to ensure the fidelity of implementation.
